I saw a great video about rhythm with my daughter yesterday. We were watching Sesame Street. Yes, you read that right; Sesame Street.
I came across this video, where a man is playing a steel drum and starts talking about how there is rhythm all around us; in a person's walk, or in the waves. In one segment, he is riding with some children in a carriage, and the horse's hooves are clipping a steady beat on the road. He listens for a moment, then starts to play his steel drum along with the horse's hoof beats. Magic! The point here is that rhythm is everywhere in life and the more we struggle to control, the less connection we have to the rhythm in the world, in our own lives, and in ourselves. My daughter came down with a nasty bug on the weekend, and she was feeling pretty crummy yesterday. I've been trying not to get the bug too, but it's a tough go when I'm not getting enough sleep. It's not easy to slow down and change the groove of my life when things like this come up. I keep wanting to try to maintain the same rhythm as always, while my body is hollering at me to change that groove and rest. Watching, and listening to that video was a great reminder. I'm tired. Everything about me needs rest right now. And that is exactly what I'm going to do. Incidentally, if you want to see the video I'm talking about, click here.
